WHAT DOES SPIRITUAL ONENESS MEAN?

I watch as people search for spiritual oneness within and without.  I see them as they stand on the cliff of spiritual truth, yet they can’t fly.  The chains of guilt and judgment are to heavy and they can’t break free.  I observe them as they fight desperately against their fear based beliefs.   I feel compassion for them as they reach out to God saying, “Please help me!”  All of us know that place of confusion and limitation.  A place of reaching for something barely out of our grasp, dangling like a star, showing us the direction, but not the path.

It is the universal truth that each and every one of us must find our own path.  God is with us, but we do the walking.  But, as we are walking towards the shining star, we stubble on rocks of confusion and doubt.  We ask ourselves, “Are we going the right way?”  The answer is always “Yes” but we doubt, and as the doubt moves in so does the judgment of others and ourselves.  Doubt leads to fear, fear leads to anger and guilt, and anger and guilt lead to judgement.  It is the state of judging ourselves that weigh us down and keep us from flying when we reach the top of the cliff.  Judgment is one of the most important lessons on the path to “oneness.”

People really don’t understand what spiritual oneness means.  They believe if the get rid of all the negative things about themselves, such as anger, then they are closer to God.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  I will share with you a story about Moses and God that is in the Bible.  Moses was up on the mountain talking with God, and the Israelites where down below waiting.   Upon the 40th day, the Israelites became frightened because Moses hadn’t returned from the mountain yet, (they had forgotten that he wasn’t to return till after the 40th night.)  As their doubt grew they became afraid and started resorting back to their old ways.  They built a golden statue and began worshipping it.  God immediately felt betrayed and became so angry that he told Moses to forget everything and that he was going to kill the Israelites.  Moses begged God saying, “God I have seen your mercy and compassion.  Please be a compassionate God and allow me to go down the mountain and talk to the Israelites.  Please give them another chance.”  God said to Moses “I will not destroy the Israelites, but I am so angry that I will not go down the mountain with you for fear that I will consume them all.  So, I will send you an angel in my place.”  By using the power of choice God was saying look, I am too angry to deal with them and I need to honor that anger by separating myself from the Israelites for awhile.  By this action I am drawing my boundaries, yet showing love by sending an angel.

Even God has anger.  Oneness is not about cutting parts of yourself off that you judge as negative.  Oneness is about embracing all aspects of our-selves and using the power of choice.  God choose not to destroy the Israelites, yet he could not deny is own emotion of anger.  So, he choose the middle ground of harmony by sending the angel in his place so that he could honor and love his own personhood because they hurt him deeply.  You see all expressions of energy negative and positive come from the same source.  So, the next time you judge yourself as impure and move into guilt and shame, know that you have just moved “away” from the oneness of God.   To judge self and others is to be in a state of fear, not love and without love you have no oneness with God or your world.  Stop believing in the fear based judgments of not being good enough and break free from the chains of limitation.  Jump off that cliff of fear and FLY!!
